Taekwondo
Taekwondo began as a ancient Korean martial art of self-defense that has evolved into a modern day Olympic sport. It develops self-confidence, self-discipline, self-improvement and self-control. It is a martial art that focuses on the discipline of both the mind and the body.
In taekwondo, choreographed forms are used that are designed for the practice of techniques against imaginary opponents. Sparring puts knowledge of techniques learned in the forms to the test against real opponents.
Physical Benefits
Besides the obvious benefits of increased self-defense skills, taekwondo provides excellent weight reduction training, increased flexibility, improved cardio-vascular functioning, strengthening and toning all major muscle groups and better balance and coordination.
Mental Benefits
Since taekwondo is a holistic system, it does not just improve the functions of the body. One soon discovers increased self-confidence, stress reduction, mental discipline, self-control and peace of mind.
Social Benefits
At UMACA, we believe that no one learns in a vacuum. We emphasize a strong community and encourage a family atmosphere. Even though learning taekwondo requires energy and hard work, UMACA's facility is designed to be a warm, friendly place where students come together as a community in the discipline of taekwondo.
Achievement Levels
In taekwondo, belt color indicates achievement level. White belts indicate beginners. Black belts are expert-level practitioners. Students are recommended for testing based on their skill levels, and then must complete testing in front of Masters of Taekwondo in order to be awarded their next-level belt.
