Sparring Class is Modified to Better Meet the Needs of All UMACA Students - Open Sparring: 6:00 - 6:30 p.m., Competition Team: 6:30 - 7:00 p.m.
The Tuesday and Thursday sparring classes have been modified in an effort to better meet the needs of UMACA's beginner and non-Competition Team Taekwondo students.
Rather than running a mixed class of beginner, non-competitive and competitive students from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m., beginner and non-Competition Team students will participate in sparring from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. From 6:30 to 7:00 p.m., only UMACA Competition Team Members will be allowed to participate.
"During sparring class, I continually felt like I was meeting the instructional needs of one group - the beginners, let's say - but not the other," said Master Brad Chapman, owner of UMACA. "By separating the groups, I hope to better focus on the fundamentals of sparring in the early class, then switch to a complete focus on the more advanced techniques used by the competition team. The Competition Team members will participate in the first class by helping to teach the other students, giving them an opportunity to mentor and coach their peers."
Non-competition team members are encouraged to stay and watch the Competition Team practice. "It is a great way for our students who do not participate in the Competition Team to see what it means to participate in competitive taekwondo," said Chapman
If you or our child is currently a student at UMACA and is interested in participating on the Competition Team, please speak with Master Chapman at your next class.
